The unnecessarily chaotic feeling became a thing of the past as I began to experience forward progress with each small attempt to use this method as I understood it from the pages of Charlotte Mason’s Original Homeschool series. Developing the skill of reading 1800 vocabulary and ponder the meaning while deciding to trust it for a year helped speed up my progress and recognize that this method was with the work to do right.
It felt great to finally trust a method for our children’s education, even though no one I knew was using this method. Despite my feeling of being alone in my growing educational philosophy, I could see that our children were learning and LOVING their homeschool days.
It was crazy… I was so overwhelmed by curriculum decisions going into our first year that it left me feeling like I wasn’t qualified to educate our children. I knew that I didn’t want to send our kids to public school and we couldn’t afford private school, yet being new to homeschooling and choosing a method that no one else was using, I was unsure if what I was doing was even the right things.
Thankfully because I was so drawn to this philosophy, it felt like a right fit for our family, even though I was learning as we went along. It took a few years before I began to make connections of why this philosophy worked without realizing it. This method worked so well, it helped my struggling learner enjoy reading, even though he was dealing with undiagnosed dyslexia.
Before I knew it, gone were the days of constantly changing curriculum, and feeling like I had to give my children test to know if they were learning as I committed to the philosophy of this method. I moved open and go curriculum to experience confidence in myself, as I intentionally planned interest-led lessons as I began to see my children experiencing, and loving, a living education.

The Way To the End …
The struggle for knowing what to do when, coupled with how and why I should be doing it became a thing of the past as I began to experience happier homeschool days with retention that lasted. It felt great to finally experience days that I was quietly doubting would be possible, lessons getting done without drama, sticking to my curriculum choices with confidence, and even reading progress for our dyslexic son.
My love for this philosophy was growing… even though I felt like I was drinking from a fire hydrant as I continued to read the Original Homeschool Series, unsure of how it all connect but trusting it because our children were learning and retaining beyond the lesson. I began reading Charlotte’s original writing differently, attempting to uncover the step-by-step method to the end that she mentioned.
Thanks to realizing that the pinnacle ideal of this philosophy was ideas, wholesome ideas that is, I was beginning to see how things fit together to create that step-by-step method with its way to the end.
Gone were the days of thinking education only happened during a few hours of the days or only happened with books. I was fully committed to going all in on this method and planning for my uniquely made children because it felt right the more I put my trust in Charlotte’s words about her experience – “For between thirty and forty years I have laboured without pause to establish a working and philosophic theory of education; and in the next place, each article of the educational faith I offer has been arrived at by inductive processes; and has, I think, been verified by a long and wide series of experiments.”.
Now, to be honest, I often times feel guilty because it feels too easy to planning . It wasn’t like that at the beginning when I was busy reading (and rereading … still rereading), pondering the meaning, connecting the philosophy to the results, and identifying the way to the end from planning to completing a year of interest-led lessons.
But as more and more years passed by, I began developing frameworks that simplified the six volumes of the Original Homeschool Series that kept people from seeing the core of this method – the philosophy itself, instead of misunderstanding it as curriculum.
