Why Time Is Of The Essence…

In her book The Good News About Marriage, Harvard-trained social researcher and author Shaunti Feldhahn shares the data for divorce rate in non-Christians, Christians, and those who simply call themselves “Christians” but do not actively engage with the faith.

Feldhahn debunked the common assumption that the divorce rate among Christians equals that of non-Christians that states 50 percent of all marriages end in divorce. 

According to her study, the overall divorce rate is around 33 percent, which means that 1 in 3 marriages end in divorce, instead of the previously assumed 1 in 2 marriages.

Within Feldhahn’s research, she found that with couples who are active in their church, the divorce rate was 27 to 50 percent lower than for non-churchgoers. 

However, the study also showed that those who simply call themselves “Christians” but do not actively engage with the faith—are actually 20 percent more likely to get divorced than the general population.

The reason is simple… those whose first commitment is to Jesus, put fewer expectations upon their spouses to meet emotional needs that only God can meet. The decrease of unrealistic expectations give marriages a firm foundation to battle the challenges of life together.

The answer to this reality is we must live out our faith in our marriage to safeguard our marriage against divorce, raise our children with Christian principles, and impact our culture with Christian values.
